  • self-important people like to say things like “choose life” but for one reason or another, each of the dregs chose something a little bit different
  • jesper, for instance, fell in with bad company, high debt, and a string of poorly-made decisions
  • or wylan, he’s trying to pay his bills and piss off his father all in one
  • nina’s just looking for a good time and had the misfortune of buying drugs from kaz brekker
  • or kaz himself, who’s dedicated his life to destroying pekka rollins, the rival drug dealer who got jordie rietveld addicted to heroin, ended up with most of their money, and left jordie to die after one too many shared needles; inej, who stays around mostly out of concern for her friends but honestly just wants to go back to decent society and make a life for herself, maybe with nina; or kuwei, who was at one point supposed to be some kind of academic scholarship wonder-kid but that was before his father was arrested and his life went to shit
  • even matthias, straight and narrow athlete he is, isn’t immune to the downward trajectory they’ve found themselves on
  • much like trainspotting itself, there’s less a coherent plot as there is a series of bad choices, illegal activities, and occasional attempts to get a decent life together, in between all the bad decisions and whatnot
  • eventually, nina and inej will move in together and get legitimate jobs, jesper and wylan will start over in amsterdam, and kuwei will finish the college applications he’s been saying he’ll finish for however many months.
  • (matthias will be dead and kaz will carry on being kaz brekker, but what can i say)
  • but before all that, choose life.  choose your friends, choose your future, choose robbing and stealing and fucking people over, choose revenge, choose losing the ones you love, choose falling in love with new people, choose running from the past and throwing away your future, choose dodgy scams and choose not choosing life at all

alternatively: *jesper voice* the worst part about getting clean was that i knew i’d need to mix with my friends again, in a state of full consciousness.  it was awful
